Nicki's mother lived at ASC and when Nicki was about 5 she regained custody. She had been in foster care because her mother was emotionally unstable. This was her home until she was about 13 or 14 when she came to me after her mother had decompensated and was being abusive with Nicki. Homeless children or children with mentally ill parents usually have to grow up real fast. They do not get a chance of being a child.
Nicki realized her mother would be sick for life and she and I talked about her making good decisions about Nicki and her life. She realized she would someday have to help care for her mother. We decided together that she would be better off as a resident of Buckner Orphanage - she graduated high school. I was her Godmother and I sent her an allowance, bought Christmas gifts, prom dress, hair salon visits and tried to be the best Godmother I could be. She went to Stephen F. Austin. Then to Texas Women's University, where she graduated.
She now has a job, car and apartment and wants to be a Lawyer. She is trying to get into Law school and working. She is a beautiful young woman and has become a wonderful human being. This is just one story of the many thousands who have resided at ASC over the years. This child was not a drug addict or drunk. She had no control over her situation and this not only applies to her but to the many who are residents of ASC.
